The Christian Right’s Continuing Assault on American Democracy

This is my response to an article titled: The Most Pro-Life Administration Celebrates the March for Life, Pushing Legislation Which Encourages It

The Christian right has long framed itself as a defender of moral values. But its true legacy is one of eroding civil liberties and undermining the pluralism that defines American democracy. By conflating religious doctrine with public policy, the movement has systematically expanded its influence at the expense of non-Christians.

One of its most insidious tactics is the push for religious exemptions that allow individuals and institutions to opt out of anti-discrimination laws. Groups like the Christian Legal Society have successfully argued that Christian beliefs should override the rights of LGBTQ individuals, women, and others. This isn’t about religious freedom—it’s about using faith as a shield to justify discrimination. When a Christian-owned business refuses service to a same-sex couple, or a school excludes a student based on their sexuality, the result is exclusion. The principle of equal protection under the law is being subverted in the name of religious liberty.

The movement’s embrace of Christian nationalism further threatens democratic norms. By promoting the idea that America is a Christian nation and that Christian values should govern public life, the Christian right fosters a climate of exclusion. This ideology has been weaponized to justify policies like the expansion of the Mexico City Policy, which blocks U.S. funding for global health organizations that provide abortion care—despite the fact that such funding supports maternal health in developing nations. It also fuels efforts to ban abortion, often ignoring the fact that many women, especially women of color and those in poverty, rely on these services.

Even in education, the Christian right’s influence is damaging. It promotes the teaching of creationism, pushes for school prayer, and supports curricula that marginalize non-religious and non-Christian perspectives. These efforts are not about “values” or “morality”—they are about imposing the Christian worldview on all Americans.

The Christian right’s greatest success has not been in advancing morality, but in normalizing the idea that religious beliefs should take precedence over civil rights. In doing so, it is successfully eroding the secular foundation of American society.
